Just using the components of GDP (as reported by the Bureau of Economic Analysis,) out of the ~$70 (per every $100 in economic output or GDP) being spent by Americans every year, I figure about $3.36 of it is on motor vehicles and parts, and another $2.55 are spent on transportation services. In total, it suggests about $5.91 out of every $100 in economic output is spent on transportation goods and services. If I divide the $5.91 by the $70 in personal consumption expenditures, it suggests consumers spend more than $8.40 out of every $100 on transportation goods and services.
