According to dictionary.com, the word excuse actually stems from the latin ex- + causa, accusation. . . see cause.  The ex-, is simply a prefix meaning “out of” or “from.”  So at its root, the term excuse really means “out of” or without cause or accusation.  I think a simpler way of saying: it is not my fault!

And it seems no matter where you turn be it on the insurance forms of auto accident claims (as this mornings opening quote begins,) earnings conference calls (on why management teams missed numbers,) or yes even in this newsletter (and its author,) there is no dearth (shortage) for giving reasons why we (as individuals) are without cause.
