The early accounts in the media suggest a pretty sluggish August. But a lot was riding on the Labor Day weekend and promotions, so we'll just have to see how it all ended up. One thing that analysts and the media seem to get tripped up on at this time of the year is the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) revision to their seasonal adjustment factors. Once again, the seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of vehicle sales is just what the economists think the monthly figure would translate to over the course of a year (adjusted for seasonality.) But you need to be VERY careful with the SAAR figures this month, because the person providing the figure may be using the old figures.
